The short answer

Describe what your business does, who it serves and what makes it distinct, using facts you can verify. Google allows up to 750 characters and prohibits links and HTML in this field. Keep promotions and price-led copy out. Use the description to explain the business, then maintain hours, services and other details in their own profile fields.

Start with the job the description needs to do

A customer should be able to read your description and explain what your business offers. If they still cannot tell whether you repair bicycles, sell them or rent them, the copy needs more concrete information.

Use this planning order:

  1. Identify the business: its main activity and relevant location or service area.
  2. Name the important work: the products or services a suitable customer would recognize.
  3. Add a meaningful distinction: a real specialty, operating approach or piece of history.
  4. Remove anything you cannot support: qualifications, guarantees, locations and services need evidence.

This is an editorial framework, not a required Google template. You can change the order when another detail matters more to your customers. Our answer-first writing guide shows how to turn a fact sheet into useful copy before polishing the wording.

Know the character limit and content rules

Google's profile editing guidance sets a 750-character maximum, not 750 words. It also says to leave URLs and HTML out of the description. You do not need to fill the available space.

The business representation guidelines require relevant, honest information and prohibit links. They also warn against distracting or low-quality copy and descriptions focused on promotions, prices or sales.

Keep the permanent description focused on the business itself. Remove a sale announcement, a repeated string of nearby towns or a claim such as “the best in the county” when you cannot substantiate it. A shorter description with useful specifics is easier to maintain than a crowded paragraph of slogans.

Before pasting your draft, count its characters in your editor and check the field's counter. Count the actual final text, including spaces and punctuation. Formatting pasted from another document can change the result.

A worked example: turn five facts into a useful description

The following shop and its details are fictional. This is a writing exercise, not a real customer profile, published listing or ranking test.

Suppose the owner of Maple Wheel has confirmed these facts:

Confirmed fact What it contributes
Independent bicycle repair shop in Riverton What the business is and where it operates
Tune-ups, brake adjustments and flat-tire repairs Specific services
In-shop repairs by appointment How customers use the service
Staff explain proposed work before starting A concrete operating approach
Helmets and bicycle lights are sold in the shop A relevant secondary offering

An unhelpful first draft might read:

The best bike experts near you! Amazing deals and unbeatable service for all your cycling needs. We do everything. Book now for our special offers!

That draft makes broad claims while leaving the important questions unanswered. “We do everything” could imply services the shop has never confirmed. Promotions also pull the description away from its intended purpose.

Here is a revised version using only the fact sheet:

Maple Wheel is an independent bicycle repair shop in Riverton offering tune-ups, brake adjustments and flat-tire repairs. Repairs are handled in the shop by appointment. The team explains the proposed work before repairs begin. Riders can also shop for helmets and bicycle lights.

The Maple Wheel example is 280 characters, including spaces and punctuation. It leaves room below the limit without adding filler.

The revision tells a customer what to expect. It does not invent an opening year, a certification, emergency availability or electric-bike battery services. If those details matter, the owner needs to confirm them before adding them.

Use the business's actual information when adapting this example. Copying a well-written description from another shop can still produce an inaccurate profile.

A second example for a business that visits customers

A service business can describe its work without implying that customers can walk into an office.

For this separate fictional exercise, Willow Home Cleaning serves Riverton and Brookfield, cleans houses and apartments, offers recurring and move-out cleaning, and confirms the rooms and requested work before a visit. No office visits, same-day availability, special certifications or customer-supplied product policy have been established.

An appropriate description from those facts is:

Willow Home Cleaning provides recurring house and apartment cleaning and move-out cleaning in Riverton and Brookfield. Before each visit, the team confirms the rooms and requested work with the customer. Services take place at the customer's property.

This description is 251 characters, including spaces and punctuation.

The useful distinction is how the service works. A long list of neighborhood keywords would not explain that process any better. Set the actual service area in its dedicated profile field too; prose alone does not maintain that setting.

Put each detail in the right profile field

The description is one part of the profile. Google's editing documentation describes separate fields for details such as hours, website, services and service area, with some options depending on business type or availability.

Use this maintenance checklist alongside the copy:

Detail Where to maintain it
What the business does and its useful distinctions Description
When a customer can visit Hours, including relevant special hours
Where the business travels to customers Service area
Link to the actual business website Website field
Individual services and their details Services editor, where available
The kind of business Category field

For Maple Wheel, the description can explain appointment-based repairs, while the website should provide the actual booking information and service details. Do not paste a URL into the description to compensate for an incorrect website field.

Keep the underlying facts aligned across your profile and website. If repairs become appointment-only, update the relevant website explanation as well. Use clear internal links so a visitor arriving on the homepage can find that service information.

Add the description, then check what is public

Follow Google's documented description-editing route, then verify the public result:

  1. Open the Business Profile you manage using the linked Google account.
  2. Choose Edit profile, then the description editing option.
  3. Enter your checked copy and save it.
  4. Check the edit's status and the public profile after the change is applied.

Controls may vary by device. Google reviews profile changes, so saving text is not proof that it is already public.

If Google's description suggestion feature is available in your region and language, you can use it as a drafting aid. Google says to review generated suggestions for accuracy. Compare every offered service, credential and operating detail with your fact sheet before saving.

An owner can also use an AI writing tool with a bounded instruction:

Draft a Google Business Profile description using only the facts below. Stay within 750 characters, including spaces. Omit links, promotions and unsupported claims. List any missing facts separately instead of inventing them.

Read and count the result yourself. Asking a model to follow a limit does not establish that it did.

Set realistic SEO and AEO expectations

A clearer description helps people understand the business. It is one maintenance task within a complete local presence.

Google's local ranking guidance discusses relevance, distance and prominence, and recommends complete, accurate information. It does not promise a specific position after a description rewrite. Do not interpret a before-and-after ranking change as proof that the paragraph caused it.

For AI search, Google's optimization guidance continues to emphasize foundational SEO and useful information. This article's writing framework is not a special format that guarantees an AI recommendation.

Finish by reading the description as a new customer: Can I tell what you offer, where you operate and what I should expect? Then check that the profile fields and relevant website page agree. Those are concrete improvements you can verify without inventing a ranking result.
